At the heart of the Scout Promise is a commitment to help others. But how do we reach those whom society often overlooks? The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) has recently shared an inspiring update on how the “Ticket to Life” initiative is transforming lives in The Gambia and across the Africa Scout Region.
What is the “Ticket to Life” Initiative?
“Ticket to Life” is a flagship World Scouting project designed to bring the benefits of Scouting to the most vulnerable children. This includes street children, refugees, internally displaced persons, and young people with disabilities who often face social isolation.
Focus: The Gambia and Adaptive Scouting
In a major step forward, The Gambia Scout Association has expanded its reach to include young people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Inclusive by Design: Rather than creating separate units, the program uses an adaptive approach. It integrates participants with hearing challenges into regular activities from the start, fostering true interaction and understanding.
- Empowering Leaders: A recent workshop focused on training teachers and Scout leaders to deliver inclusive activities, ensuring that communication barriers do not stand in the way of a Scout’s personal growth.
- Building Belonging: For many of these young people, Scouting provides their first real opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities, helping them build the confidence to become active, responsible citizens.
The Global Impact
The Gambia is now the 13th country in Africa to launch this initiative. To date, “Ticket to Life” supports over 9,000 young people across countries including Kenya, Uganda, Benin, and the DR Congo.
Why This Matters to Us
As Scouts and Guides, we believe that Scouting is for everyone. Whether it is through adapting our signs and signals or simply opening our doors to those who feel excluded, we are fulfilling our mission to “Create a Better World.”
