Your Journey to HAM Radio Starts Here

A complete, beginner-friendly guide to passing the Indian ASOC examination and getting your amateur radio licence.

By Ramkumar R (VU3WMV) Published by Scout Library 22 Chapters • Both Grades

Have you ever wondered how people communicate across continents using nothing but a radio and an antenna? How emergency volunteers keep communication lines open when mobile networks and the internet go down? Welcome to the world of Amateur Radio — popularly known as HAM Radio.

Today, I’m excited to announce that my book “Get Your HAM Licence” is officially published and available on Amazon India. This book is the result of a deep passion for amateur radio and a desire to make the path to getting licensed as simple as possible for beginners in India.

Why I Wrote This Book

When I started my own journey towards getting a HAM licence, I found that most study materials were either too technical for beginners, written for the American FCC exam (not the Indian ASOC), or scattered across dozens of websites and PDFs with no clear structure. I wished there was a single, well-organised book that started from absolute zero and walked me through everything I needed — from what an atom is, all the way to making my first contact on the air.

That book didn’t exist. So I decided to write it.

This book assumes no prior knowledge of electronics or radio. Every concept is explained from the ground up, with simple language, practical examples, and exercises to test your understanding.

What Makes This Book Different

Written specifically for the Indian ASOC exam. Unlike most amateur radio books that target the American FCC exam, this book follows the exact syllabus prescribed by WPC India. The regulations section covers the Indian Wireless Telegraphs Act, the ASOC Rules 1978, and Indian callsign allocations — not American rules.

Truly beginner-friendly. Every chapter starts from first principles with simple analogies. Resistance is explained using the water-pipe analogy. Capacitors are introduced as two metal plates before any formula appears. No prior knowledge of physics or maths is assumed.

Both grades in one book. Parts I and III cover the Restricted Grade syllabus. Parts II and IV add the additional topics needed for General Grade. One book for the entire journey.

Exercises with answers in every chapter. Each chapter ends with 8–10 practice questions and fully worked answers, including numerical problems with step-by-step solutions. The appendix includes sample exam questions in the actual multiple-choice format.

Complete reference appendices. Resistor colour code chart, frequency band allocations, Q code reference table, Morse code chart, and a curated list of resources including software tools and propagation websites.
